Whenever we rant about our problems or struggles, it’s like they have to think about some such relevant struggle they have personally experienced and then compare our miseries with their experience. Whenever you tell them you are going through something, they make sure you feel like your problem is better than theirs and that they are still handling it better than you. Transference is acceptable as long as it is fueled by empathy and not superiority. I chose humanities in 11th and 12th and am further pursuing design. I have encountered many people who have called my stream ‘comparatively’ easier. I receive nearly a quarter of the respect as a science student and am shamed into even calling my struggles ‘struggles’. I may not have 50 chemical reactions to memorize by heart by Tuesday, but I do have 50 dates of Indian history to mug up. Who made this hierarchy? Who fooled us all these years into thinking the only DOMINANT and HECTIC stream is science? If I am tired of handling two completely different academies, one humanities and one design, why are these science students convincing me they work twice as hard as I do? When I complain about my dates, people, years, timelines, chapters, maps, why are they asserting dominance with their ‘chemical reactions’, ‘math formulas’. I am not complaining to be compared. I simply want someone to just understand my struggles. A passionate athlete or a passionate mathematician, and I lie equal. Our streams are different, yet our struggles are parallel. They may work 24 hrs a day on a math problem or train four times a day, but so do I. Why is the art and design major ranked lower in people’s minds compared to a STEM major or a science professor? ART IS FED ON CREATIVITY. FIELDS UNRELATED TO ART ARE FED ON INTELLIGENCE. Art and intelligence are two broad spectrums. They CANNOT be compared on the same grounds. INTELLIGENCE IS NOT HIERARCHICALLY HIGHER THAN CREATIVITY. They exist individually as distinct individuals with SEPARATE IDENTITY. So yes, as a design student, if I work hard for 6 hours, then yes, that is equivalent to someone who works hard for 6 hours in their particular stream, and no, I shall not take any criticism about how ‘its just drawing’.

UP TO DATE

Hello!

Anushka Alurkar

Hello!
